The Show
Broadchurch is a British crime drama television series broadcast on ITV for three series between 2013 and 2017. It was created by Chris Chibnall, who acted as an executive producer and wrote all 24 episodes, and produced by Kudos in association with Imaginary Friends Productions Ltd. The series is set in Broadchurch, a fictional English town on the coast of Dorset, and focuses on Detective Inspector Alec Hardy (David Tennant) and Detective Sergeant Ellie Miller (Olivia Colman). The ensemble cast also includes Jodie Whittaker, Andrew Buchan, Charlotte Beaumont, Arthur Darvill, Jonathan Bailey, Vicky McClure, Adam Wilson, and Matthew Gravelle.
The first series, which premiered on 4 March 2013, focuses on the death of local 11-year-old Daniel “Danny” Latimer and the impact of grief, mutual suspicion, and media attention on the town. Danny’s family (his mother, Beth (Jodie Whittaker), father, Mark (Andrew Buchan), and sister, Chloe (Charlotte Beaumont)) is a key focus. The second series, which premiered on 5 January 2015, follows the dual storylines of bringing Danny’s killer to justice and a case from the past returning to haunt Hardy.
Simone appeared in the third and final series, which premiered on 27 February 2017. The season focuses on the rape of a local woman (Julie Hesmondhalgh) at a birthday party where Simone’s character was a waitress, while the Latimer family goes to extreme lengths to move on from Danny’s death. Chibnall has stated that the third series was the last and that he originally envisioned Broadchurch as a trilogy.
Episode #3.04
Trish relives the night of the party, including her row with Ian and chat with the kitchen staff whilst the police discover that convicted rapist Aaron Mayford now lives in the area. Ellie and Hardy visit him but, whilst he is defensive, he is persuasive as to an alibi. They also learn from Beth that Trish found a bouquet on her doorstep the previous night with a message of hope and from Cath that her marriage to Jim is on the rocks, leading to the identification of Trish’s anonymous sex partner and that of the sender of the email. Then Laura, another rape victim, comes forward whilst Mark tries to involve Paul in his quest to track down Joe Miller.
Episode #3.07
With insufficient evidence Hardy must release Ed and takes out his anger on his daughter’s tormentors but Jim now becomes suspect, given the historical rapes and his connection to one of the victims. This, in turn, sets Cath wondering about her husband’s guilt, sparking off a call to Trish and visit to the police. Mark’s desperate action provokes a positive response from Beth, whilst Maggie makes a brave stand against her greedy new boss, refusing to capitalize on Mark’s despair. Ian comes clean with Trish, admitting that his love for her occasioned his involving Leo in his illegal surveillance, leading to Cath and Trish reuniting. Meanwhile the relative of another suspect makes a disturbing find.
